(March)
This is the appearance day of Sri Chaitanya and is a major festival for Gaudiya Vaishnavas. Festivities take place in temples worldwide, especially in Mayapur, India. Gaura Purnima means “Golden Full Moon,” signifying that Sri Chaitanya took birth at the time of the full moonrise. An elaborate feast is served at moonrise. This celebration coincides with Holi, the Hindu “festival of colors” which is a celebration of spring and the triumph of life over death. In India many people celebrate by sprinkling each other with powdered and liquid dyes.
